JESSICA DORIS DUBE
is a screenwriter living and working in Los Angeles, CA. Her explorations in ceramics began as a hobby in an effort to help fill the torturous hours when she wasn’t writing (of which there were—and always will be—many). But the clay quickly became much more than a space holder. Screenwriting is a profession where, no matter how hard one works, nothing is ever truly finished, and the product of any effort is never really tangible. The opportunity to translate effort into a medium that culminates in a solid, final form that one can see, feel, and hold provides much needed closure in the loop of artistic expression. For Jessica, clay has become that medium.
Jessica is a storyteller by nature and a wordsmith by profession. This will never change, nor will it be superseded. That said, ceramics have not only provided peace, tranquility, and a reliable artistic outlet for Jessica, they have also supplemented her income in times of need. With all of this in mind, Jessica’s work in clay is an exploration of form meeting function: Much like her writing. Just as a screenplay is the scaffolding for a film or tv show—a tool used to build upon and enhance the overall experience of a story—Jessica’s ceramics are meant to augment their user’s experience of the mundane. From drinking coffee, to arranging flowers or displaying produce, an In Lieu of Writing piece strives to elevate the everyday.
